Sheldon "Shelly" Sinai Obituary (1939 - 2023)

Sheldon "Shelly" Sinai, born January 9, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, peacefully passed away on July 30, 2023 after a 18 year battle with cancer. A beloved figure in his community and family, his infectious humor, zest for life, and love for his family will be deeply missed. He is survived by his devoted wife, Corinne; daughters, Randy Sinai, Kandi (Larry) Dach, Barbara (Rick) Altman and PJ (Stuart) Mager; brother, Stuart (Carole Shaw) Sinai; grandchildren, Nicole, Emily & Jacob Dach, Molly, Madison & Alvin Altman, Jeremy Mager, and Hannah Sinai. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Molly and Phillip Sinai; sons, Zachary Sinai and Phillip Sinai; brother, David Sinai and sister, Delores Schuldinger. Shelly graduated from Mumford High School in 1957 and later from Ferris State University with a degree in accounting. He put his education into practice and co-owned and operated Phillips Oil Company with his brother for 50 successful years. Known for his vibrant sense of humor, Shelly was a beacon of joy, always ready with a witty remark. His wife Corinne, who he had been married to since 1976, and his eight grandchildren were often the delighted audience of his playful antics. Shelly had an unwavering passion for life. He found joy at the horse race track, at the Jewish Community Center, at The Liberty Club and on trips to Las Vegas. These pursuits were a testament to his energetic spirit and his love for a good thrill. Shelly’s charisma and love for good conversation made him a regular at the JCC. Even up to his later years, he was there every day, working out, conversing with friends, and adding life to every room he entered. An ardent bowler, Shelly was a valued member of his team and stood out as one of the oldest, yet most spirited, players. His passion for the sport was as enduring as his love for a good jest. At home, Shelly was a culinary maestro, particularly celebrated for his egg salad. He found his true happiness in playing along with his grandchildren, who often roped him into their imaginative play. An avid reader, Shelly was a regular at the local library, often checking out several books each week. His love for literature was as evident as his forgetfulness about due dates. Shelly was a loving husband to Corrine, an inspiring father to his three children and three stepchildren, a doting grandfather to eight, and a genuinely good person. His honesty and kindness were pillars in his business and personal life. Shelly Sinai's absence leaves a profound void, but his spirit, humor, and memories live on in the hearts of those he touched. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at Forest Lawn - Temple Israel Section (Use Taylor Station Road entrance). Shiva will be observed on Tuesday evening from 4-7:30 PM at the home of Shelly and Corinne. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a toast to Shelly's memory, place a small bet on a horse race, or return a library book, in honor of Shelly's love for these simple joys.
