Selma Kastan Obituary (1923 - 2009)

Selma Kastan, age 86, of Columbus died Friday February 20, 2009 at Wexner Heritage House. She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin and her sisters, Lillian and Phyllis. Selma was the middle child of David and Bella Ostash. She is survived by children, David (Carol) Kastan of W. Bloomfield, MI., Bradley (Holly) Kastan of Columbus, and Stacey (Larry) Kohn of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Lauren, Ben, Rebecca, Jake, Sam Kastan, and Max, Sydney, and Hayes Kohn. Selma was born Feb. 14, 1923 in Youngstown, OH, and graduated as a registered nurse from Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh. She worked in the family delicatessen and as a pediatric nurse for many years. After a 7-year courtship she married Alvin Kastan. Selma and Alvin spent the majority of their life in Ashland, Ohio where they raised their family and operated Kastan’s Jewelers for over 50 years. Selma lived for her children, loved to play golf, and was active in the nearby Jewish community. Funeral Service 2PM Sunday, February 22, 2009 at WEXNER HERITAGE HOUSE, 1151 College Ave., with Rabbi Michael Ungar and Rabbi Sharon Mars officiating. Burial to follow at the New Agudas Achim Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the Kastan residence, with visitors welcome Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday at 7PM and Monday and Tuesday at 7:30AM.
