Marvin H Whitman Obituary (1926 - 2021)

Marvin H. Whitman, age 95, passed away on March 9, 2021. Preceded in death by his wife, Babette F. Whitman; parents, Charles and Dorothy Whitman; and sister, Edith B. Whitman. He is survived by daughters, Patricia (Stanley) Beder and Pamela Whitman (Thomas Parham); son, Peter (Elizabeth) Whitman; grandchildren, Kimberly (Spencer) Lane, Michael Beder, Melissa Whitman, and Alan Whitman; great granddaughter, Eliana Lane; brother in law, Harlan (Sally) Simon; and nieces, nephews, and friends. Marvin was a proud Buckeye, having graduated from the OSU College of Optometry. In addition to his private practice in Columbus, he was a part-time clinical instructor at OSU for 20 years. Marvin was Past President of the Ohio Optometric Association, and Past President of the State Board of Optometry. Marv attained the rank of Eagle Scout and maintained his membership in The Boy Scouts of America since 1940, including serving on the Boy Scout Council and as a member-at-large. He was also active in The Jewish War Veterans, Post 122. As a lifelong patron of the arts, he played clarinet in the OSU Marching Band and supported the Columbus Symphony, Columbus Museum of Art, and Franklin Conservatory. Marvin and Babette celebrated their 70th anniversary in June 2020. They were long-time members of Temple Israel, where Marvin was on the Brotherhood Board. A private graveside service will be held on Friday, March 12 at Forest Lawn - Temple Israel section. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Temple Israel Brotherhood or any of the organizations mentioned above.
