Harold "Hal" J. Tanenbaum Obituary (1932 - 2023)

Hal Tanenbaum, age 91, long time Bexley resident, died on December 16, 2023. The son of the late Cy and Annette Tanenbaum of Columbus. Hal attended the Telshe Yeshiva and had a deep love for his religious roots. A graduate of OSU with a degree in Fine Arts, Hal was commissioned and served as an officer in the US Army in Germany and in the reserves. Upon return to Columbus, he became a member of Beth Jacob Synagogue where he served as Junior Congregation leader since 1958 and taught at the Beth Jacob Religious School for 18 years. He was a past officer and Board member for over 60 years. Additionally, he served on the boards of Columbus Torah Academy and the Columbus Jewish Center and as President of the Vaad Ho’ir. Until the late nineties, he conducted business as Hal Tanenbaum Associates, an advertising and graphic design company. Hal was often referred to as “Virtuoso Artist in Residence” in and around the Columbus Jewish community and leaves timeless works of stained-glass windows in synagogues, theater posters, and unique designs on the covers of many books, brochures, and event announcements. He was preceded by his wife Barbara who passed away 14 years ago. He is survived by his son, Mordechai (Gittel) Tanenbaum of Houston, TX.; daughter, Cathy (and the late Mike) Rupf of Houston, TX.; sister, Leah Bat Simcha (Darrell) of San Francisco, CA,; brother Paul (Karan) Tanenbaum of Bexley, OH.; grandchildren, Yonit, Metav, Natania, Sigalia, Savanna, Noach, Ryan, and Yehuda; great–grandchildren, Gavi, Ben, Carter, Nili, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday, December 17th at Beth Jacob Synagogue, 1223 College Ave, Columbus with interment to follow at New Beth Jacob Cemetery..
