Benita M. Zacks Obituary (1936 - 2013)

Benita M. Rosenthal Golden Zacks passed away June 3rd surrounded by her family. She was born June 22, 1936 in Columbus to the late Eva R. Golden and Louis Rosenthal. She is preceded in death by husband Arnold O. Zacks, her father & mother, Eva R. Golden, Louis A. Golden and brother, Stanley N. Novak, sister-in-law, Ethel H. Novak & Corinne “Corky” Saltzman of Chicago. She is survived by her son, Louis Randy Zacks (Rosemary), son, Benjamin S. Zacks (Mary Beth), daughter, Sally Zacks Dunn (Marcus) and daughter, Arinn Zacks Mandel (Lee) and her twelve (12) grandchildren, Jonathan (Betsy) Zacks of Chicago, Jennifer Zacks of Boston, Rachael “Ticho”, Michael, Lauren Zacks and Halley Dunn of Columbus, Erica, Samantha and Andrew Hausdorff of Cooper City, Florida, Taylor, Alex & Zach Mandel of Davie, Florida, brother-in-law Gerald “Sonny” Saltzman of Chicago, special cousin, Gordon B. Zacks, and numerous beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and life long friends, the late Rene Cades, Roberta & Lou Goldstein, Ron & Carol Elkins, Floyd & Betsey Bender, Barry & Annette Turner her Bexley sorority sisters. Benita was foremost a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, chef extraordinaire and mother to generations of her children’s and grandchildren’s friends. Her recipes are legendary and her love was measured in opening her table to all who would sample her sumptuous creations. During her love affair with ‘her Arnie’ of 49 plus years, she volunteered at school events, ‘schnored’ for Berwick Elementary, BBYO, City of Hope and along with her friends and helpers, Helena, and Anna Brooks, raised her brood and tended to the needs of her whole family for holiday celebrations. She opened her home during the illnesses of relatives. Consecrated and married by the late Rabbi Jerome Folkman at Temple Israel, she and Arnie educated their children at Congregation Tifereth Israel. After she became a widow, she doted on her grandchildren and worked at her sons’ businesses until she began her battle with COPD. During her illness she lived with her son, Benjy and daughter-in-law Mary Beth, and then in her last year with her daughter, Sally and son-in-law Marc and grand-daughter, Halley. She felt blessed that she was welcome in their arms and able to live out her time in caring comfort. Services will be held at Epstein Memorial Chapel, 3232 E. Main Street, Columbus, Ohio 43209 with a graveside service at the Tifereth Israel Cemetery on Wednesday June 5th at 1:30 p.m. with Rabbi Harold Berman, officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, The OSU James Comprehensive Cancer Center, City of Hope or the American Lung Association – COPD . Shiva will be observed at the home of Sally and Marcus Dunn Wednesday June 5th and Thursday, June 6th , at 6:00 p.m. in the evening and the morning minyans at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6th and Friday, June 7th.
