Lazar Almasanu Obituary (1929 - 2024)

Lazar Almasanu, 94, died at his home on March 13, 2024, surrounded by family. Lazar was preceded in death by parents Isidor and Malca Almasanu; sister Tzili Rudich and brother Solomon Almasanu. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gerda Almasanu as well as his children Anny (Eric) Hoffman , Benjamin (Wendy) Almasanu; grandchildren Aaron (Melissa), Jordan (Nicole), Noah, Maxwell, and Gabriel; and great granddaughter, Aria. Born in Romania in 1929, Lazar was a Holocaust survivor. After a two-month courtship, he married Gerda and five years later, they emigrated to the U.S. He earned a PhD in electrical engineering from Ohio State and taught courses in computer information science and mathematics at several local universities. Most recently, he was employed by the Defense Logistics Agency where he worked for 20 years. Often holding multiple jobs simultaneously, Lazar labored tirelessly to create a comfortable life for his family and saw his American dream become a reality. Lazar and Gerda raised two children in whom they instilled the values of a strong work ethic, educational attainment, and pride in their Jewishness. Lazar was a staunch supporter of Israel and long-time member of Beth Jacob Congregation where contributions in his memory may be made. Shiva will be observed from Thursday, March 14th - Wed. March 20th at the Almasanu home. Shachris will be held daily at 7am. Mincha/Maariv will be held daily at 6:05pm. The family will be receiving visitors during the following hours: Daily 7-9am, 6-8:30, pm, Sat. Night 9-10:30pm, Sunday 8:30-11am, 6-8:30pm.
